Just an hour outside the bustle of DC you'll find Scott and Becky Harris mashing, distilling and bottling their handcrafted organic whiskey, gins, spirits, brandies, and liquors. The first legal distillery in Loudoun County since before Prohibition, Catoctin Creek is on its way to being a household name.
Founded in 2009, Catoctin Creek has been popping up in just about every restaurant from Baltimore to Annapolis, DC to Lovettsville. And the spirits are deserving of all the hype, having already racked up some impressive awards.
When Scott and Becky left their careers in software and chemical engineering respectively, they knew they wanted to distill the best spirits in Northern Virginia. To top it off they've certified everything organic and kosher. Using local ingredients is of importance to them — their grape brandy for example uses grapes from local Virginia wineries.
With the grand opening of their new distillery store starting this weekend, you can now purchase bottles on-site after a tour, distilling workshop or bottling session.
To celebrate the store opening, Catoctin Creek's distillery will be open Friday from 6 a.m. to 4 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. with a live band in the afternoon, and Sunday from 1 - 4 p.m. There's also a pig roast at the Passenger in DC on the Sunday, July 3.
Check their website out for more event information.
