Where I've Been + What Was Good

written by Amanda on 06/15/2011

A look at where I've been eating and what's been good...

• The rooftop of the Jack Rose is my new favorite place for a drink — and not just because some of the city's best cocktail minds have flocked to tend bar there. The roof has a sort of Northern Cali vibe, all warm woods and clean lines, but the cocktail menu skews way South with tiki-inspired drinks like the Caretaker, a tall glass filled with crushed ice, rum, curaçao, coconut cream, pineapple and bitters.

• I've been on a soft shell crab kick, made possible at least in part by trips in the past week to both Todd Gray's new Watershed and his 12-year-old Equinox. Both are serving excellent, lightly pan-fried versions of the seasonal crustaceans (down with deep-fried!). The second-floor patio at Watershed is quite an urban oasis, shielded from the streets by new buildings and softened by a lushly landscaped walkway. And the casual menu of coastal cuisine really hit the spot, from the barbecue shrimp and grits to sweet corn soup, hush puppies, crab cakes loaded with big lumps of meat, and warm cookies with milk for dessert.

• Capped off a meal of pulled pork, fried pickles and hushpuppies with a little more fried food at Standard, thanks to their awesome doughnut "robot" (at right) cranking out hot, sugar-dusted rings right on the sidewalk.

• I revisited an old favorite dish at lunch the other day: the Atomica pizza at Pizzeria Paradiso. I love the salty combo of salami, black olives, mozzarella and hot pepper flakes.

• The latest entry in the lobster roll boom is from Luke's Lobster down in Penn Quarter. I picked one up on one of those 100-degree days, and the cool lobster salad was a nice foil to the antagonistic heat. The tiny counter-service restaurant makes a great addition to the neighborhood.

• While shooting a photo for an upcoming Chef 5 Bites video (come back Friday to see it!), I was reminded what a gem the Dupont Market on 18th Street is. I took home a great egg salad sandwich and an Italian sandwich on nice crusty bread.

Looking for more ideas on where to eat? Here's more of where I've been eating: Westend Bistro, Freddy's, Estadio, Ripple, Bread Ovens at Quail Creek; Et Voila, Bibiana, Fiola, Eve, Estadio, Pitango; Volt, Proof, Tabard Inn, Hill Country;  Sheppard Mansion, The Source, Rasika, Taberna del Alabardero

I just discovered Jack Rose last weekend! Love!!! What an amazing space upstairs. Maybe we'll need to schedule a board meeting up there.
